5th gen syncs to iTunes but can't get to music through ipod interface

I have a 5th generation ipod that I love. My DH decided to update it this week, so updated iTunes and synced my ipod. Now, we can see that the music is on the ipod through iTunes, but can't get to the music through interface on ipod. My ipod is completely functional and we were listening to it just this week before the update. HELP!
