Issues with iTunes after a crash and reboot

I would appreciate any help I am having with iTunes.

2-3 weeks ago, I updated the OS on my mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro from Snow Leopard to Yosemite. Have been dealing with the fallout ever since.

iTunes was fine until tonight when, all of the sudden, the computer had the momentary blue screen of death, then it rebooted. Unfortunately I wasn't able to photograph the error message that came up indicating the computer was re-starting. The computer then tried doing something with the iTunes library which seem to stall so I stopped it. I discovered all of my iTunes playlists and about 95% of my music had disappeared, but I used a back-up from less than a week ago in Time Machine to restore the playlists and my songs.

I'm now having 2 problems with iTunes:

1. (a minor issue) Every time I open the app, it keeps asking me "Do you want the application iTunes.app to accept incoming connections? Clicking Deny may limit the application's behavior. This setting can be changed in the Firewall pane of Security & Privacy preferences." It happens every time, even though I've already went to the Firewall settings and made it so iTunes should be allowed to accept incoming connections without always being asked.

2. The more annoying problem: On a mass scale, songs in iTunes now cannot be used because "the original file could not be found." i.e. I try to play a track, the error message pops up, and there's an exclamation icon in a circle next to the track. This is affecting over 1300 songs!! iTunes for whatever reason seemed to have changed the file paths for these songs. The same error message asks "Would you like to locate it?" for that one track. Is there a faster, more efficient way to "locate" these songs without having to do it one-by-one? I would really prefer not to have to simply re-load my songs afresh into iTunes because I will lose songs on my playlists.

Thank you for any help!

Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.

Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

codesign -vv /A*/iTunes.app

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The following lines should appear:

/Applications/iTunes.app: valid on disk

/Applications/iTunes.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement

Is that what happens? You can then quit Terminal.

The computer just crashed again (screen went dark, then it rebooted, and screen displayed in 5 languages "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."). I wasn't trying to do anything with iTunes, oddly, it happened because I opened Firefox which then kept crashing itself. Issues with iTunes remain the same, however.

I am starting to wonder if both the computer and Firefox crashing more is indicative of my computer being on its last leg (it's almost 5 years old, after all?), or if this is due to the Yosemite upgrade?

Edit to add: This was before I saw your reply, Linc. Will try Terminal. Thanks!!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Have you replaced any of the internal components: memory, hard drive, optical drive?

That type of panic seems to be caused in some cases by starting up an older Mac from a third-party SSD. Check the SSD manufacturer's website for a firmware update.

It can also be caused by faulty or incompatible memory, or sometimes (perhaps) by a malfunctioning peripheral.

The panic is not caused by software.

Hi Linc, sorry for the late reply, was away on business.

Yes, you're right, I recently upgraded the RAM from 4 to 8 gigs. I used these instructions:

MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270

and bought this from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF 8&psc=1

I thought I had picked RAM that was compatible with my Macbook Pro but perhaps there's an issue with it or it's not? I haven't replaced anything else hardware-wise.

Thank you for any suggestions, as always!
