iPhone keeps crashing

Hello, I own an iPhone 5s with the latest iOS.

For the past 2 months, the iPhone would randomly crash--while using email, checking the weather, etc. No specific apps or activity would cause the crash, it was just random.

The crash would consist of the iPhone going to a blue screen, and then going back and forth between a light and dark grey screen. This process of blue/grey/dark grey would go on for anywhere between 10 minutes to an hour.

Then the iPhone would start.

This morning, I had the option of an update. Approximately 1/2 way through the update process, the iPhone crashed and it is now in a loop of blue screen, off, light grey screen, dark screen, and then off.

What is the easiest way to resolve this problem? System restore via iTunes? I have a few photos that have not been backed up. Will they be lost?

Thanks for your help.

Hello ronald.c,

After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone would shutoff on its own. Then boot to a blue scrren and grey screen colors. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it - Apple Support

Get help with the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

If you see a solid color screen (black, white or blue)

  1. Plug in your device to a power source. If you see the low-battery screen when you plug in, let your device charge for at least 10 minutes (20 minutes for iPad) before using it.
  2. Reset your device while it's plugged in.
  3. If resetting doesn’t fix the issue, restore your device.
  4. If you still see the issue after you restore, contact Apple Support.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
