I want to update my software but my disc drive is not functional, are there alternatives?

I have a Macbook Pro 5,3 that I would like to update, currently my Macbook runs on 10.5.8.

My main problem is that I can't purchase the update because my disc driver is not functional anymore(my only problem, Macbook otherwise is doing very well).
I have been to the store and they advised me to call, and now it seems like I need to pay 25,- pounds so I can get help over the phone which is a bit ridiculous to me.

Besides that, what would be the alternatives for me to install Snow Leopard and hopefully then update to the newest software for my Macbook?

I'm afraid Snow Leopard was never available as a download ... only as a DVD.

Snow Leopard is available from Apple for $20. Since your current optical drive isn't working, you can pick up any number of USB external DVD drives cheap. In the U.S., many are available for under $20.

Once you have those, install Snow Leopard, and then update it to 10.6.8.

Thanks very much pal! Was not aware and not tech savvie enough to realise I could get a usb connected disk drive. Plans set in action to update! Thanks again.

You're welcome. I picked up an external USB external DVD read/write drive a couple of years ago. It was only $25, or around there. You don't have to look for one that is specifically for Macs (there isn't really such a thing). Purchase any brand you want.
