Q: Google Chrome Hangs/Won't Quit

When I quit Chrome (version 43.0.2327.5 dev (64-bit), the window closes, but the program hangs and won't quit. (Spools). I must force quit pretty much every time I use the program. I've checked for malware and viruses, and found none. Not sure if this is a Chrome problem or a Mac problem. Thank you for your help.

Running Yosemite 10.10.2 on Mac Pro, mid 2012

2.9GHz Intel core 17

8GB memory, 1600MHz DDR3

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    1. If you can get along without Chrome, I would uninstall it. Not good on Macs and to be avoided.
    2. The software you are using to check for "malware and viruses" may be the problem. I would uninstall that too.
    3. If you have installed any "cleaners" or similar software (e.g., cleanmymac, mackeeper), those may also be the problem. Uninstall those as well.
    4. Take a look in the Console app (it's in Applications → utilities) and see if there are any error messages that can help pinpoint the problem.
    5. If you must have Chrome, uninstall and reinstall it.
    6. Try a safe boot (restart and hold down the shift key). This starts up your Mac without third party added on background processes. If the Chrome hanging symptom is gone then you know the problem is some added on background process you have installed (like an Internet plug-in). Then you can remove the internet plug in(s) and try Chrome again with a regular boot.
    7. Try using Disk Utility to repair your hard drive and permissions.

I will try these things. Have already tried a safe boot, and forgot to list it. Chrome hung after the safe boot as well, but i've not tried the other things, and will. I like Chrome better than Safari, so hate to lose it, but maybe will need to do so. I also have problems with Safari hanging, but don't use it much. Thank you, Arthur!

Thanks so much, Arthur. I did not know about using the console. The last item listed when I did an error search was always MacKeeper, and so I uninstalled it and now things seem to be working fine. Thanks for teaching me some new stuff!

As a follow-up, removing Mac Keeper helped only briefly, and then the hangs continued. I uninstalled Chrome, and reinstalled. This seems to have done the trick. The current Chrome is apparently not the same as this version did not put it's shortcuts on my dock. Still getting font errors in the console, but the program no longer hangs and works well. So far. Thank you again.

MacKeeper may have damaged your OS beyond a simple repair or installation (which is what it does).

If you continue to have problems you might consider erasing your HD and starting over with a clean installation.
