Q: How do I stream rented/purchased movies to my Toshiba Smart TV?

I have a 40" Toshiba Smart TV to which I would like to stream rented/purchased movies from iTunes.

I believe my TV has up to 4 HDMI inputs.

The movies only download in 720p, so how would that appear on my TV set which is 1080p full HD?

I'm given to understand that i would need an Apple TV box to enable streaming via an HDMI cable from the box to the set.

I also know that there are means by which I can download movies for free from various sources, but I'm a little dubious about the quality.

Is it possible to stream to the TV via the RJ45 cat 5 cable that runs from my router to my Freeview box? (I'm in the UK)

It should be noted that my iMac is not fitted with any HDMI outlets, hence the need for an Apple TV box.

I am not familiar with a freeview box, so i can't address that part of the question. Here are the terms for the iTunes store (choose your country):

And here is some information on Apple TV:

It appears that it does require an HDMI port.

I also know that there are means by which I can download movies for free from various sources, but I'm a little dubious about the quality.

I would be less worried about the quality and more about the illegality.

same as most tv which is rarely hd and when it is it's rarely 1080p
same with dvd

Hi, well I'm happy to pay for rent/buy of movies. I was mostly concerned as to how best to stream, i.e via HDMI or RJ45 cat 5 cable.

We'll forget the 'Freeview' issue as that is perhaps more of a UK matter.

I'll have a look at the links about Airplay, and since I'm using Yosemite, it's worth a look.

Hi Rudegar, thanks for your reply.

We'll skirt the DVD issue as I don't own a DVD player. Here's a section of my TV's manual which shows the resolution chart
or rather that which interests me:

For instance, what's the difference between 1080i and 1080p?

The difference is 'p' is progressive which means the frame rate/movement is smoother on fast moving subjects:

Hi again, I've looked into 'About Airplay mirroring in OS X' as well as 'use Airplay etc in Yosemite.

Here's what Apple say about compatible iMacs:
"A supported Mac
AirPlay Mirroring in OS X takes advantage of the hardware capabilities of recent Macs to deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models support AirPlay Mirroring when using OS X Mountain Lion or later:
iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Mac Pro (Late 2013 or newer)
My iMac is an early 2008 model, but the Apple article advises that my imac needs to have Airplay capability. How do I find that out in
System Preferences?

It appears that, no matter what gear I buy, I might still not be able to stream movies to my TV, even though I have WiFi capability.

I'm using an iPad 3 and iPad Air (with HDMI to lightning adapter) to watch movies from stations that make that available on my TV (has HDMI ports). In this case, no iTunes needed. We also have a subscription to sling tv which has some US channels.

Hi, (again) it appears that I don't actually have to stream via my imac. All I need to do is connect the Apple TV box to my TV.
