Also, some micro USB cords are for recharging only, and as such only carry power. Make sure your micro USB cord is capable of transferring data.

I live in a remote place and micro usb's aren't commonly possessed around here.  Have to order one?

It might not work even with a micro USB. I recommend you to read all the other posts about this! I use a micro USB to connect AppleTV to my iMac, but it doesn't recognize the AppleTV anyway!

Yes it will, not helpful to post as such in multiple threads. If it's not being recognized then either the steps aren't followed exactly, there are firewall/security settings preventing or you need to try a different cable. You're also free to have Apple restore it.
