How can I stop the Numbers spreadsheet from moving wildly (left to right, top to bottom) when I touch the mouse to move to a certain cell ? Can’t it be locked down or something. It’s very annoying when using a very large spreadsheet.

There is, to my knowledge, no way to turn off scrolling. If you are moving to Numbers from another spreadsheet program, keep in mind that the Numbers design favors several smaller tables over one, big sheet. The templates (available at File > New) provide excellent examples.

It’s not a question of size. If I make, as you suggest, File > New, I get a basic sheet, but if I swipe my finger on my mouse left, right, up or down, I can see a grey background as the sheet is being moved. If the sheet was locked down, the vertical and horizontal scrollbars can and could be used more efficiently instead of wobbling around. But thanks anyway.
Your "when using a very large spreadsheet" phrasing suggested to me you were working with something of considerable size!
You probably don't need to use vertical and horizontal scrollbars much any more. In Numbers I hardly even see them. Just swipe to go in the direction needed.
