Q: Why not explain network problems?

I have tried to upgrade an iPhone 6 and iPad today to iOS 8.2 using iTunes latest version (checked) from windows 7.

It took 5 attempts for the iPhone 6 to upgrade.

It took about 10 attempts for the iPad to upgrade.

All the time I was getting 3014 and 3004 errors reported, and after adding a proxy (MS Fiddler) to the system I could see the issue was 504 (gateway timeout) issues from gs.apple.com (i.e. not local, and probably from Apple.com).

Nowhere on the Apple site does it mention even the possibility that an non-local system could be the problem with these error codes. Instead there is a litany of checking hosts files, network settings, disabling firewalls and anti-virus (both risky suggestions) and even attempting to upgrade from third-party systems at Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" - Apple Support or If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support - WHEN THIS IS NOT THE ISSUE!

As many people have stated, it they repeat the clicking the update button in iTunes enough times, eventually it just works - which suggests it is NOT A THEIR ISSUE.

I have spent MANY hours trying all the daft suggestions at the pages linked above, only to find that in the end just clicking the button again works. This is not our problem.

Please could your documentation just even for a minute suggest the user try again a few hours later. instead of reconfiguring their system, network and security systems? It would save us all a lot of pain.

Thanks

You are not addressing Apple here. This is a user to user support forum. Feedback to Apple goes HERE, and then click on the appropriate subject.

Also, if you have a gs.apple.com entry in the hosts file, then the computer was either used to jailbreak a device in the past, or the device you are using now is jailbroken. There should not be a gs.apple.com entry, that would lead to that error.

    Thanks for the link.

I have no gs.apple.com entry in my hosts file. My iPhone and iPad are not jailbroken.

Reading dozens of posts all over the place suggesting this, I haven't ever seen any one say "oh yeah - I had a gs.apple.com entry in my hosts file, thanks"

I mentioned the hosts file issue since you brought it up.
