I am getting the Apple on the screen and the Apple TV box is flashing. I tried holding menu and down, as suggested, without result. I unplugged from the wall and waited, then plugged back in. Still nothing. It flashes seven flashes, then repeats. How can I get it to restart?

If you are unable to reset the Apple TV, and it will still not start past the Apple logo, then you will need to restore the Apple TV by following the directions in the article below.

Thanks for the reply Alex. I happened to have found that article. In the remote place I am I have to wait a few days to get the cable with the USB port. I hope it works.
