Okay, I'm sure this is a common one, but when I type text (in the font and size I want) into DVDSP it appears rather jaggy, whether I look in the Canvas, in Simulation, or on a burned DVD. Where a character has thin verticals (eg 'n') one leg of the 'n' appears two pixels wide, and the other one pixel wide.

The same font at the same size looks fine in iDVD. Any suggestions?

Martin:

What size and type are you using?
Do you refer to the button texts or just basic text written in menu?

Check in DVDSP Menu Preferences your Final Rendering settings. Do you have Software or Hardware based setting? Try changing it and make a new build (not necesary to burn) and test the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD Player playing at 100% NOT full screen, to check if you notice any change.

Various. I've tried in Helvetica 24pt which should be fairly standard, and while it's not as bad as others it's still not really acceptable and nowhere near as good as iDVD.

Both

I tried it both ways, and it's still not good. When I use the default screen size setting of DVD player (slightly smaller than the display DVD SP uses) it isn't too bad, but at "Normal Size" (slightly larger than DVD SP) I still get vertical lines on u's and n's of different thicknesses.

I don't think so, since that thread deals with a problem which only appears on a TV, and doesn't appear when using DVD Player. My problem is worse when using DVD player. Also the guys in that thread are discussing a problem specific to 4.1, whereas I'm using 4.0.3.

(Is there a way of playing a VIDEO_TS folder onto a TV using a camcorder? I'm reluctant to burn test disks to experiment how the text appears on a TV.)

Usually that is the best way ultimately, you can try monitoring on a monitor via a card to the computer, but it is not quite the same as stepping off to a DVD Player and television.

FWIW you may want to find a good supplier of decent DVDs at a reasonable price. Not sure how high the costs are in the UK, but almost a non-issue at this point on this side of the Atlantic. Tayo Yuden can be had for about .25-.30 without any effort really. May help reduce your aggrevation a bit. Maybe Hal, Jake or others from that side know of good spots for you. Not trying to throw money away, more that it may be worth your time
