Q: Trouble reducing iMovie memory usage

My daughter has been making iMovie trailers on my iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.3). She has burned up a ton of memory on my phone (5 MB right now), which I need to shrink so I can do other things with it.

But no matter what I do, it seems to make only a tiny dent. I tried making iTunes versions of them to move over to my MacBook. I synced it with my MacBook. I can't find them in iTunes now on either my phone or laptop. It seemed to only take up more iMovie memory.

I did succeed in converting them to AV files which I now have saved on my computer, because I don't want to lose the trailers entirely.

I've deleted a bunch of the trailers on the phone, but it only shrank the storage used a tiny bit.

I'm usually pretty savvy with this sort of stuff (for an amateur). I feel like there are a bunch of iMovie-related files hidden somewhere on the phone. But I can't figure out where they are or how to get rid of them. Help is much appreciated.

    Hello spudboyvt,

The resource below will explain a few different ways that you can move your finished iMovie trailers or videos to your computer or iCloud Drive so that you can remove them from your iPhone to free up space.  I've highlighted the key information here for you.  Click on the article for complete details.

iMovie for iOS (iPhone, iPod touch): Share to other devices or apps
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH3349?locale=en_US

Share to a nearby device using AirDrop

You can send your video clips or projects directly to another iOS device or a Mac using AirDrop.

AirDrop works with iOS devices that have a Lightning connector or Mac computers with OS X Yosemite. AirDrop requires an iCloud account and transfers information using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology. You must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or within approximately 30 feet (10 meters) of the other device. Transfers are encrypted for security.

    1. Do one of the following:

      • From the Video browser or Theater: Tap the video clip you want to share.

      • From the Projects browser: Tap the project you want to share.

      • If you’re editing a project: Tap the back button  to return to the project details screen.

    2. Tap the Share button , then tap the device you want to transfer to.

If the other device doesn’t appear automatically, make sure AirDrop is turned on for both devices in Control Center on iOS or the Finder on a Mac.

Save video to the photo library

If you want to send your finished movie or trailer to your computer so that you can view it there, save it to the photo library from iMovie Theater, and then import it to your computer using an app such as iPhoto. If you have an iCloud account, you can also save your movie or trailer to iCloud Drive and then download it to your computer.

If you want to send any project to your computer for backup, or to be able to edit the project further on another compatible iOS device (such as iPad or iPhone), you should send the project to iTunes or iCloud Drive, or use AirDrop to quickly transfer files between devices. You can import projects sent to iTunes on your Mac using iTunes file sharing.

    1. Do one of the following:

      • From the Projects browser or Theater: Tap the video clip or project you want to share.

      • If you’re editing a project: Tap the back button  to return to the project details screen.

    2. Tap the Share button , then tap Save Video.

    3. If prompted, tap the size you want to export.

Medium produces a smaller file that uploads to the web more quickly. HD produces a larger file that’s great for viewing on a Mac or on a high-definition television (HDTV) through Apple TV.

When the export is complete, the finished movie appears in the photo library. You can access the photo library from the Photos app on your device. The next time you connect your device to your computer, you can import the movie file to a photo app, such as iPhoto, on your computer.

Once you've copied your files to your computer or iCloud Drive, follow the steps in this article to free up space on your iPhone.

    Hope this helps ...

Thanks, judysings. Alas, I still need some extra help.

I followed these instructions: Moved all the iMovie trailers to my laptop via AirDrop. Then deleted all the trailers on my phone.

But I still have a problem: iMovie shows there are no videos or projects. But when I check the storage, it shows there are 3.2 GB of data and documents with iMovie.

Where are these documents, and how do I get rid of them? I can't find them on the phone to delete them. Please note: this 3.2 GB is in addition to the roughly 700 MB that the app itself uses.
