paste number into calculator app

There seems to be no way to paste a value into the Calculator app in Yosemite. Is it possible?

I don't know if this was possible in previous versions, but the inability to paste into the app would be ... no great surprise, I guess, judging from the general trend toward the lowest common denominator.

Well, the Calculator app on iOS is pretty simple, and I can paste into that. And what I want to do is convert a large number from decimal into hex -- does your spreadsheet do that?

Oh, I guess so, using DEC2HEX in Excel or Numbers, but still ... that doesn't excuse the inability to paste, or even correct in Calculator. Even my 30 year old HP calculator has a delete key.

Ah. But it doesn't work if you are in Programmer or Scientific mode (via the View menu). [edit: oh, paste works sometimes in these other modes too, but I'm not going to try to figure out the necessary conditions. must be some regression missed by QA...]

So this is a QA fail.

Also, for some reason, the backspace key is now working properly --- it was resolutely failing to do anything yesterday. Oh, spoke too soon -- now it is failing again. Clearly, some tricky bug. Seems if you click in the window, the backspace key stops working and won't work again until you change modes. Or something like that --- but since I'm not paid to do QA for Apple (nor, evidently, is anyone else) I'm not going to bother to enumerate all the use-case fails.

Works on mine in all three modes.

Apparently, there's another "use-case fail" you need to keep track of.

well, there is at least one: click in the number display area as you might do if you thought you could select the displayed number or paste in there. Now try to either paste or delete any entry you make. You won't be able to until you switch modes.

That's what I though I did. There was an entry in the calculator, I clicked in it, and pasted. Just tried the delete thing and it deletes the last number entered.

You can't seem to use the delete key on a paste, but the clear key works.

I was having the same issue, while in 'Scientific" mode, I could not paste values into the calculator, or edit manually entered numbers (backspace didn't work).

However, if I switched modes from 'Scientific' to 'Basic', the cut and paste worked, as well as editing, switching back and forth to 'Programmer' and 'Scientific' restored the function in 'Scientific' mode as well.

So, if it stops working, switch modes, do some test entries, and then switch back.
