Preview is an app in your Applications folder and is the default to open pdf's, jpeg's, etc. I also use it to make simple edits on them.

Odd that it wouldn't open - what type of document is it? I have to go through loops to get my downloaded financial statements to open in Preview.

Preview is the Apple application designed for viewing pdf and a variety of image files. Did you move the file to the Desktop and try to open it from there?  Another possible method of viewing what's inside is to select the file and tap the Spacebar on the keyboard to start Quickview.

Do you have Acrobat Reader?  You can try it.  It should be a free download from Adobe.

It's a document from an attorney. Is it somehow a privacy issue?

    Try the Acrobat Reader first.
