Why does Adobe Reader installation on Yosemite stop at 40%? The Adobe Reader Installer downloads readily. Installation begins, but stops at 44% (usually) or 40% (once). MacBook Air, Yosemite 10.10.1.

Quit all browsers and RSS news reader and try again.

Shut down wait a minute and power up -- sometimes best way to clear activity when you are not sure what is causing the problem.
Any particular reason you want to use Adobe Reader instead of the built-in Preview application? Reader is going to hijack as many system things as it can.
Good question. I'm happy with Preview.
Some places that I go into, in particular to pay bills, are requiring Adobe.
So I attempt to update and it just keeps going in circles and never updates, as far as I know.
