Before he told me he planning to sell the iphone. The iphone is already locked. He told me, suddenly it became it that.
If he is not the original owner of the device, then it is locked to the original owner's iCloud ID. If your friend was the original owner and has forgotten his password, then he needs to recover it with Apple. If he cannot do that, the device is useless to both of you. It cannot be activated.
Can I just connect the iphone to the itunes and restore it?
You can try to restore it, but you will not be able to activate it. It is Activation Locked. Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support
Without that information, you cannot activate it. It is useless.
