You need a SIM card for the carrier the phone is locked to if it is locked. It does not have to be a currently active SIM card, and it only needs to be in the phone for activation, after that you can remove it. So you can borrow a SIM from another phone for a few minutes.
So I just bought a new Factory unlocked iPhone 5s and am looking as of now to only use it as an iPod Touch. Would the carrier of the SIM Card of another iPhone previously activated to that SIM matter in activation considering it's factory unlocked?
Yes, any SIM will do if it was purchased new directly from Apple. If you bought a "new, factory unlocked" phone from a anyone other than Apple, however, you were scammed, as Apple is the ONLY source for truly unlocked phones.
