    What model Mini?

Are you sure it is the original install disks for that Mini?

I have tried holding down control R (I have a windows keyboard) and restarting and it brings me to my usual looking desktop. when you boot to the install disk is the desktop supposed to look different?

It sounds like you may be trying to install 10.6 overtop of 10.9.5. You have to erase, better to repartition as 1 partition, the 10.9.5 partition first.

Are you booting from the install DVD while either holding the C key or the Option key and selecting the DVD drive to boot from?

Was the EFI flashed for internet recovery?

    what EFI version is installed?

    MM41.0042.B03 added Internet Recovery.

You can also check by forcing your Mac to boot into Internet Recovery by holding down Command+Option+R at startup.

I have tried holding down CONTROL R (I have a windows keyboard and CONTROL on a win keyboard is supposed to be COMMAND for a mac) and it still boots up to my usual desktop with my photo on the desktop, etc. I don't know how to do any of those partition things you guys mentioned. help!

I think I also tried restarting and holding down the C key. again, it simply took me to my normal startup desktop, with the windows os X menu ready but the install os X option with a circle and slash thru it

it says here? control on the windows keyboard is command for the mac?

When you use a Windows (PC)  keyboard on a Macintosh computer, the keyboard shortcuts that you use map to different keys. In particular, the primary key that is used in keyboard shortcuts in combination with other keys is frequently different. The following are the primary key substitutions on the Windows keyboard, and their Macintosh equivalents.

    WindowsMacintosh
CONTROLCOMMAND (for most shortcuts) or CONTROL
    ALTOPTION
    Windows/StartCOMMAND/Apple
    BACKSPACEDELETE
    DELETEDEL
    SHIFTSHIFT
    ENTERRETURN

And the part you should pay attention to is...

oh so it's the windows key I should hold down! ok so windows R while I restart and see what screen I get. So then ideally, I won't be taken to my "usual" desktop, and I could then install os X 10.6

    thank you!
