Q: my imac keeps restarting itself (kernel panic)

Hey,
recently i upgraded the RAM in my Late 2009 imac 21.5" from 4Gb to 16GB,
since then my mac has been loggin me out every now and then and i have to log back in,
or restarting itself, and saying it restarted because of a problem.
never had any problems with my mac since new, so im pretty sure its gonna be the ram,
but if anyone has any advice, i would be very appreciative.
if anyone can make head or tale of my recent panic report too, that would also be great!

Make sure VirtualBox is up to date first. Remove the third party ram, reinstall the original Apple ram and see if the panics persist. Where did you get the ram? Are you SURE that it's the exact spec required for your iMac? Most likely you've got bad or incompatible ram.

just updated virtual box, but yes i did get the exact same specs for the ram. purchased from amazon

    16GB (4x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM (204 pin) 1066Mhz PC3 8500

ill see if the virtual box update does anything, if not ill try swapping the ram over

What brand is the ram? Amazon sells Crucial among other brands. If it's not Crucial see if you can return it and either get Crucial from Amazon or direct from Crucial or from OWC.

the brand was komputer bay. it came with a plethora of good reviews from mac users so i figured, must be alright.

Yeah.......get rid of it! It's one of MANY bargain basement brands that play fast and loose with the specs, they think close is good enough, and in PC's it usually is but Macs require EXACT spec ram. The only two vendors I, and many others here, trust are Crucial and OWC.

oh right. i figured since it was more expensive, and with more reviews on amazon that it would be an ideal candidate for my needs,
as i do hold to the old adage of, ''buy cheap, buy twice.'' when it comes to computers etc.

if the problem persists, ill try putting the original ram back into the system, and then checking out amazons return policy.
if a return is successful, ill get a hold of a couple of sticks made by crucial, and ill update you

also are you able to see which part of the panic report relates to the ram?
and what is the ''BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Google Chrome He'' bit about, as that seems to be on all the reports...

i did try booting into the diagnostics/hardware test by holding the D key or Cmd + D, to see if the problem could be diagnosed that way, but to no avail.

anyhow, as i said, ill keep you updated with my progress...

    thanks for your time Mike.

Amazon has a very liberal return policy, you shouldn't have any problems.

To run The Apple Hardware Test on your iMac you need disc two of the original gray install set. Put disc two in the drive and restart while holding the D key and AHT will start. Since it runs independently of the installed OS it doesn't matter that you're now running a later version.

Kernel panics can be hard to track down sometimes. The easiest thing to look for is usually a software problem, thats why I suggested VirtualBox. When you don't see an obvious software problem you look at hardware, ram is responsible for the majority of hardware related KPs. Another frequent offender can be a corrupt OS X install. Having a brand of ram known to cause kernel panics is a red flag in your case. I've replaced the RAM with the original factory RAM, and so far, it's smooth sailing.
Amazon's returns do seem quite liberal as you say, and I have started the returns process, and will take your advice on purchasing RAM from Crucial when my refund has arrived.
I was afraid of that. I think my cd's are in the attic with the box, behind six years worth of crap. But the hardware test is now superfluous due to the return of the RAM. However it's good to know I should keep the cd's handy for any unforeseen future occurrences.
I figured after nearly six years, my mac deserved a treat, as it's served me well and hopefully will continue to do so.
But next time, I think my research into brands will be more extensive than just reading amazon reviews.

Again, I'd like to thank you for your guidance Mike, and I'll read those sites you've linked.

Hopefully soon, ill have some decent Ram in my Mac, and this thread wont have to be used again.

    Fingers crossed!

Apple's hardware test, while it does check ram, isn't really that good at finding bad modules. Other software like Rember and MemTest are only slightly better. Having the original ram is the best way to test. I recently upgraded my late 2009 iMac to 16gb of Crucial ram from Amazon and an SSD so I hope I've extended the usefulness for awhile longer. I'm confident you've found your problem but if not just post back. Good Luck!
