IP address 169

Hello-

I have an internet connectivity problem. We use a Airport extreme as a router, and a airport express as an extender. We have Cox internet modem.

Some of our devices will connect properly, however occasionally several of the devices will fail to connect, yielding a IP address 169.

The Airport Extreme is currently in Bridge Mode, not sure if that is correct setting or not.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

This sounds as if you have a modem/router or gateway type of device that has been furnished to you by Cox.....not a simple modem. The type of device that you have would determine whether the AirPort Extreme can function as a router for the network, or more likely, whether it will need to work in Bridge Mode to function correctly with the modem/router.

To confirm, can you post back with the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?

Thanks, I'm not familiar with this device, so I downloaded Cisco's setup manual for the device to take a look.......

http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/video/at_home/Cable_Modems/3200_Series/ OL-30823-01.pdf

At this point, I am a bit confused since Cisco labels the device as a modem.....but the manual clearly states that it will supply up to 253 IP addresses for connected devices.....which would qualify it to act as a network router.

If the AirPort Extreme is currently set up to operate in Bridge Mode, then it is the Cisco device that is handing out IP addresses for connected devices on the network.....so any Internet connection issues would fall back on the Cisco.....since the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode has nothing to do with assigning IP addresses on the network.

If you want the AirPort Extreme to act as the router, for your network devices, you will need to change the setting for Router Mode from the current "Off (Bridge Mode)" to "DHCP and NAT".

Whether that will solve the intermittent connection issues on your network......I cannot say.

I attempted to switch to DHCP/NAT mode, but then I get an error message stating "The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your base station".

My Extreme has an IP address of 172.16.117, with a router address of 172.16.1.1.

My Express has an IP address of 172.16.1.20 with the same router address as the Extreme.

The DHCP Range it tries to apply is 172.16.1.2 to 172.16.1.200.

It is just crazy that the Desktop MAC I am currently on is connected to the internet wirelessly, but the laptop MAC just next to it won't connect, nor will my IPhone or my wife's IPad.

I am vastly confused now.

If you will reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings, and then set it up again, the AirPort will use the 10.0.1.x IP address range, which will not be in conflict with the 172.16. range provided by the Cisco device.

If it were me, I would power off the Cisco modem and leave it off for 20-30 minutes to allow it to fully reset.

During the time that the modem is powered off, I would reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings, then power it off.

After the modem power down period, power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes.

Then connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem and power up the Extreme, wait a minute or two, then set up the AirPort Extreme again. Depending on whether the AirPort thinks that the Cisco modem is a modem or router will determine how it will be setup up. If the AirPort winds up in Bridge Mode again, then you can manually change the setting back to DHCP and NAT and the AirPort will use the 10.0.1.x range for IP address assignments.

In addition to Bob's comments, your Cisco modem is, exactly that, a modem and NOT a gateway device. However, it does, as you know, also provide for IP Phone service.

I had one of these when I had Cox as my ISP. It is important to allow this modem to become fully initialized. This may take a call to Cox to get them to recheck it from their end.

Your AirPort Extreme should be configured as a router with this modem. That is, it should have BOTH NAT & DHCP enabled. The IP address on the AirPort's WAN side should be a public IP address, not one beginning with: 10, 172, or 192. If it is, then there is something amiss with modem and Cox should replace it.

Once properly configured I didn't have any issues with this modem & my 5th generation Time Capsule that I was using as my "main" Internet router.
