Q: Error: Apple TV Restore

When I try to restore my Apple TV iTunes recognizes it as an iPhone and will not restore.

I receive an error message: This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

    Hello, GGLindsay.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are unable to restore your Apple TV and are receiving a specific error.  While the article below isn't specifically for an Apple TV, the same steps will address this issue.

Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

    Cheers,

    Jason H.

In more recent discussions today, lots of us had the blinking apple logo and learned that we need to do a full restore. It's a bit complicated, but I can tell you that the business of the computer thinking you're trying to restore an iPhone, not Apple TV is due to a system whose most up-to-date iTunes version still doesn't "know" that Apple TV has been introduced to the world. I had to scrap my attempt to retore my Apple TV via our otherwise just-fine Snow Leopard iMac, and do it on my MacBookPro running Mavericks. Then it recognized AppleTV as, well, AppleTV and not an iPhone. I hate to think what restoring it with iPhone software might have caused!

After I got the thing restored, I then had to do the more common reset by holding Menu and the down button until the light blinked really fast, then unplugging the power to the Apple TV and replugging it, and then it booted normally. Unfortunately, I had to re-enter all the old settings from scratch, including the passwords to my local Wifi network and for Netflix, not a task without the potential for blind rage using the clicker buttons on the remote.
