Never seen it before in 4 yrs. Things seem to play ok (so far, anyway), but a red line never means nothing. Anyone know what...and how to get rid of whatever it is? Thanks

Don't recall seeing that before. Have you tried trashing your FCP Preferences, which is the usual first step when FCP begins to act unexpectedly?
You can download Preference Manger from Digital Rebellion (free);

and let it do all the work.
Your preference will be reset to default settings the next time you launch FCP, so check your scratch disk settings, etc.
