iMac memory addition

I have a mid-2010 21.5''. I have 8GB now (4 x 2GB). Can I remove 2 x 2GB and add 2 x 4GB, for a total of 12? Or do all slots need to contain the same GB?

Thanks

No, only each pair of slots needs to match. You can remove the memory from the bottom slots and replace it with two 4 GB modules. The maximum configuration is:

Maximum Memory16 GB
Memory Slots4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

Reliable vendors are OWC, DataMem, and Crucial.com.

The slots are arranged relative to tilting the machine over from its normal position such that you are looking at the bottom of the housing. It's a long and narrow cover like a grate with screw to keep it in place. In that orientation there are two slots above and two slots below. You need to match for the two bottom slots.
