Mac running slow ever since I downloaded Yosemite

Hello,

I downloaded Yosemite about 3 days ago and ever since I downloaded it, my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011, 4 GB memory) has been extremely slow. Whenever I try to do something, the spinning wheel appears every time. I've ran a virus-scan through it, although I knew it won't matter since one is built it, and nothing showed up. I've shut down my computer multiple times and it still happened 5 minutes after starting back up. It's annoying because now something that should take not even a minute or two to type takes around five minutes.

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

I would start by going to Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) just incase, by coincidence the HDD is starting to fail or data has been corrupted.

You can try repairing permissions incase these got corrupted during the upgrade (I had heard of this happening).

In Disk Utilty ensure the HDD is selected (rather than partition) and then try 'Verify Permissions' to see if there are any problems and then 'repair permissions' if you need to. You also have a 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' if that finds issues.

You could also clear down caches and check login services to ensure there is not too much loading on startup hat could be bogging it down:

Mac OS X: Setting up Login, Startup items - Apple Support (This article is old but somewhat relevant),

You could also try something like cleanmymac to see whether it can remove caches and clear some free space.

As Linc says also, I would check Anti-Virus and configure settings to use less resource/features or remove it completely - Macs are generally good without Anti-Virus but I do understand the concern to be extra cautious.

Last resort, I would probably buy some more Memory and to be utilised by the new OS.

This is most likely caused by some third-party software you have installed, but there are other possibilities as well. Try starting with my Mac Performance Guide.

If that doesn't help, download a copy of EtreCheck:

Run it and post a copy of the report it generates here.

Please review the options below to determine which method is best to remove the Adware installed on your computer.

The Easy, safe, effective method:

http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

Also read the articles below to be more prepared for the next time there is an issue on your computer.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hopefully this wasn't too much/too little. If more is needed I will get it but this is what was appearing the same exact time the spinning wheel appeared.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Mar 18, 2015 1:42 PM in response to zacharytrainor123

When you upgraded, you also activated FileVault. The conversion isn't complete because the drive is malfunctioning. A sudden burst of write activity can push a drive that was already on the edge of failure over the edge. You would be charged for a repair, but not for diagnosis. If Apple confirms that the drive is bad, you have the option of replacing it yourself, which will save you some money.
