My messages to another iPhone user are green, which means they're not iMessage? How to fix?

Hi,

My husband and I both have the iPhone 5s, iOS 8.2. We are working on figuring out how to message exclusively using wifi, since we will be traveling to Japan soon and don't plan to unlock our phones or to get a plan for messaging in Japan. While trying to figure this out, we read several articles that indicate that blue messages are iMessages, and green are sent as SMS. Strangely, our messages to each other show up as green, even though we are on wifi. Both of us have iMessage turned on in the Settings > Messages tab. Our main concern is accidentally using data in Japan, but also I'm just frustrated and curious why iMessage is not working for us?! If it matters, we are also on the same phone plan, but iMessage IS working between both of our phones and others on our plan/ with iPhones.

Thanks in advance!

Check each device in Settings>Messages and make sure that iMessage is on and activated. For iMessage to work successfully, both the sender and receiver have to have an active internet connection. You may need to just do a reset on one of the phones, or you can turn iMessage off, and then turn it back on again and see if it activates. If so, you might also want to delete any message threads that you currently have between each other. There may have been a problem with one in the past.
