Are only the albums missing, or only your photos?  If your photos are there, but not your albums, you may have hidden the albums.

There is a hidden "Show/Hide" control to the right of the title "Albums". Hover the mouse there to reveal the button.

But if your iPhoto Library is apparently completely empty, tell us more.

    • Did iPhoto crash, when you upgraded the iphoto Library?
    • Where is your iPhoto Library stored, on an external driver in your Pictures folder?
    • Is the size of your iPhoto Library still large enough to be holding all your photos?

Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?

And which kind of backup do you have? Time Machine? A clone?

I see the show - hide button but when I go to show my old albums (slideshows) do not come up.

Yes, I was having trouble with the old version and it crashed in the sense that it was unable to completely transfer the photos.  Wheel kept spinning.  I went to the Apple store and they said a few of the photos were corrupted.  So we started over.  They saved the old photo album and converted to new Iphoto version.  I didn't notice that the old slideshows were gone until recently.  And yes I mean slideshows not albums.  Sorry.  It does seem like I have all the photos but I don't want to reconstruct the slideshows again.  Size is not a problem - about 5000 pics.  I asked about that at the store.  They had no concerns.  I will look at where the library is stored.  I looked at the external hard drive and cannot see where to go.  I appreciate your help.

They saved the old photo album and converted to new Iphoto version.

It would be good to know how they have done that. If they restored the library with iphoto Library Manager, the events will have been transferred, but none of the projects - slideshows, books, ...

Do you have a backup from time, before the AppStore Geniusses restored your iPhoto Library?

Yes, I have Time capsule and it should be there.  Correct?  Not sure how to find it though.

See this link:   iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later) - Apple Support

Follow the steps below to view and restore from your Time Machine drive.

    To restore photos:

    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Connect your Time Machine drive.
    3. In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
    4. Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
    5. Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
    6. Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.

iPhoto may prompt you to repair your library if there are some inconsistencies in your files. If so, please allow it to proceed by clicking the Repair button. If you notice blank thumbnails, reopen iPhoto while holding down the Command and Option keys. When the Rebuild iPhoto Library window appears, enable the "Rebuild all of the photos’ thumbnails" checkbox. This may take a long time, depending on the size of the library.

Quit iPhoto, before you do that.
