Q: Retina iMac 3tb Fusion drive Boot Camp failure

Trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 1tb Bootcamp partition on 3tb Fusion drive. BCA creates the partition, Windows installer sees it, but requires formatting it, but then it can't install to it. I get an error that it can't create or see the partition. I'm assuming this has to do with BCA creating the partition someplace Windows can't handle it (past the first 2.2tb of the drive).

Here is the info requested in a previous thread.

After splitting the drive into 2 partitions, then selecting the top one, the '+/-' buttons are greyed out. If I select the bottom half, the '-' button is available, but the plus is greyed out.

We may end up using Terminal commands to get you working. DU seems to have limitations in splitting it beyond two parts.

That's correct with a Fusion Drive, only 1 additional partition can be created. The OP has already used that for Macintosh HD2.

Can I add a partition to the hard disk with Fusion Drive?

Using Disk Utility, you can add one partition to the hard disk on Fusion Drive. Once you add the partition, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage

Can I add a Windows partition?

You can create one additional partition on the hard disk with Fusion Drive. You can create either a Mac OS X partition or a Windows partition. If creating a Windows partition, use Boot Camp Assistant to create it, not Disk Utility. From the Go menu, choose Utilities. Then, double-click Boot Camp Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions. For more information on Boot Camp see the Boot Camp support page.

Note: Boot Camp Assistant in OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 and earlier does not support 3TB hard drive configurations

keg55 DU has limitations, but diskutil does not have the same limitations. On a 3TB Fusion drive, with a Hybrid MBR, you have a CS on HDD, BC, and then another part which has the remaining OSX CS part.

Can I add a partition to the hard disk with Fusion Drive?

Using Disk Utility, you can add one partition to the hard disk on Fusion Drive. Once you add the partition, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage.

The Flash can also be partitioned using resizeStack and choosing appropriate physical disk UUID. I have done this on three Minis by building my now CS. The artificial limitations of DU and its broken and undocumented features are bad form from Apple.

Try the following resizeStack (this will create a ~400GB BOOTCAMP). Change 1000G to a desired value.

    diskutil cs resizeStack 718A36B4-10B9-49A9-B585-CFC222080507 E2271529-B42D-49F9-B231-3CAE6A0FF812 1000g  FAT32 BOOTCAMP 0g

The last part (disk1s5) will get renumbered and can be added back into the CS volume.

Should I return the drive to a single partition via Disk Utility first or leave it with the current two partitions? What would the command need to be in order to create a 1tb partition for Bootcamp?

No. Just leave it as is. The first long string is the LV "Macintosh HD" and the second the physical disk slice disk1s2, which is a part of the larger disk disk1. There should be a new disk1s3. Recovery HD and Macintosh HD2 will get renumbered. The part Macintosh HD2 can be added back to the CS volume.

Okay. Bootcamp partition is created. It's only 500gb. Smaller than I wanted.

How do I add Macintosh HD2 back to the CS volume?

I'll try installing Windows in the morning. Don't want to annoy the wife with that **** loud boot up chime.

    Thanks.

Can you post the output of diskutil list and diskutil cs list? It will record the current state and also show the current UUIDs used, which should help with the commands.
