Q: Retina iMac 3tb Fusion drive Boot Camp failure

Trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 1tb Bootcamp partition on 3tb Fusion drive. BCA creates the partition, Windows installer sees it, but requires formatting it, but then it can't install to it. I get an error that it can't create or see the partition. I'm assuming this has to do with BCA creating the partition someplace Windows can't handle it (past the first 2.2tb of the drive).

Here is the info requested in a previous thread.

Made sure it was internet recovery this time. Picked a backup from the 15th to be sure. Didn't fix the partitions. Will try the other method.

    Received error on first command.

    Rogers-iMac:~ reberhart$ diskutil cs removeDisk 62E20106-159B-4939-87C7-915CC8D682C5

    Started CoreStorage operation

As I mentioned earlier, I already removed the Bootcamp partition in Disk Utility. Could this be why this command is failing?

disk1s4 shows up as HFS, but at the same time it is in the CS, which is not correct. Can you run Disk Utility and choose Repair?

Run mount -v . Here is an example from my machine.

    mount -v

/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)

devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)

    /dev/disk0s4 on /Volumes/rMBPBCMP (ntfs, local, read-only, noowners)

map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)

map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)

Is disk1s4 mounted? Can you try removing disk1s4 from the CS volume when booted in Internet Recovery (not local Recovery).

This is what I get for mount -v

/dev/disk2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)

devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)

map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)

map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)

/dev/disk4s2 on /Volumes/My Book (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled)

/dev/disk3s1 on /Volumes/WININSTALL (msdos, local, nodev, nosuid, noowners)

How can I tell if it's mounted? I'm not sure how to remove it from CS in Internet Recovery mode. Would that be a terminal command?

If it helps, this is what I see in Disk Utility. The second Macintosh HD is greyed out. Not sure why.

Once booted in Internet Recovery, click on Utilities -> Terminal and run diskutil cs list. Using the output, run diskutil cs removeDisk with appropriate physical volume UUID. I suggest disconnecting all external storage (WININSTALL and the WD disk).

Restarted into Internet Recovery. Went to Terminal, ran diskutil cs list. Oddly, disk1s4 was not present. Decided to try Disk Utility, received error that there was a disk missing from the Fusion Drive, which it offered to fix. Clicked fix. Ended up with a Macintosh HD with a Macintosh HD and greyed disk1s4 partition. Also a Drive 2 with OS System on it. Could not merge any of them in Disk Utility, even though it gave me the minus for disk1s4. Restarted and computer no longer boots. Get a flashing folder icon.

Can you boot in Internet Recovery and check what state the CS LVG/LV is in? DU is very buggy vis-a-vis CS volumes.

I suggest erasing the SSD and HDD and rebuilding the CS LVG/LV and using TM to restore using Migration Assistant (not a full System Restore).

You're talking over my head. How do I check that? Running diskutil list and diskutil cs list again or something else?

t think the disk2 I'm seeing is just the internet recovery, not an actual disk.

Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) and launch Utilities -> Terminal.

Run diskutil list and diskutil cs list. Disks can be renumbered by OS X. If possible, post the output. Either you can use Safari, but a bit painful to switch or use a camera to post a screen shot.

The CS volume looks a bit strange. You do not have a Recovery HD, which used to exist on the HDD (disk1s3). Do you want to erase the current CS and rebuild it and use Migration via TM to get your data back? You can even try BCA after the CS volume is rebuilt and you have OSX back.

Whatever will get me back to square one as efficiently as possible. My data is all backed up to Time Machine, so nuking and starting over may be the way to go. Will I have to re-create my Recovery Partition as well? Not sure how that got toasted.
