OS 10.10.2 Freeze and Start-Up Hang

MacBook Air 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB.

Symptoms

Especially when the display has turned off and or the computer is asleep, the display comes back on when I click or touch a button, then I get the spinning beach ball. I can sometimes get Force Quit to open, sometimes not. Sometimes when Force Quit opens, I can Force Quit applications, sometimes not. Sometimes I can Relaunch Finder and sometimes not, however it never relaunches, it just quits. The dock will magnify, but when I click on any application, it does not start to bounce or open. The only thing that I've found to do is hold down the power button.

Then, sometimes it boots normally and works, other times it hangs about 1/2 way through the progress bar on the apple screen. Other times, it makes it to the login screen, but with no login boxes. Other times, it allows me to put in my username and password, but never logs me in or tells me that my credentials are invalid. When it fails at one of these points, only a hard shut down works. Sometimes, it will boot normally and work fine the next time, and other times, I have to use Safe Mode, reset PRAM, or just keep hard shut down and rebooting.

This stall in the first paragraph and the boot problems in the second happen about 10 times per day.

Things I've tried that I can remember (this started in November, 2014).

No software updates available.

Reinstalled OS yesterday for the second time

Trashed HD/Library/SystemConfiguration

Told App Store to not look for or download update automatically
