accessing desktop from laptop while away (ARD)?

i am reading up on Apple Remote Desktop from a previous question to the forum and i am wondering if this is the correct tool for my needs. i can see that it fulfills a larger network need but can anyone recommend it if i basically want to grab files off my desktop computer when working on my laptop at the coffee shop (or elsewhere like out of town)?

any thoughts? advice? thanks!

ARD is not necessary unless you are managing fleet of Macs.

System Preference > Sharing > Screen Sharing

will give you control of a remote Mac. If that Mac is on your local Network, you can use very fine Mouse control as well. Otherwise it can be sluggish.

If you want its files, you may be better served by Back to My Mac:

OS X Mountain Lion: Use Back to My Mac
