Normally, the signal strength is great where I am. The downloads are always fast too. And right now, there is nothing else in this house that is turned on which should be causing any type of interference. I only have my cell phone and computer turned on. I do hear some kind of modulating energy type sound coming from outside. Would this be it? How can I find a resolution to this? That modulating sound is kind of making me feel really agitated and uncomfortable and I have no idea where it is coming from. I am wondering if it is the cause of the WiFi lag too? If so, what can I do about it? I am not sure where it is coming from.

Hold down the Option key while you click on the Wi-Fi Icon in the MenuBar. That will show some statistics like these:

What do you see for PHY Mode?

Channel?

RSSI?

Transmit Rate?

and perhaps most important, how many other Networks do you see?

I was hoping you would say DSL, which makes a slow, sweeping, whooping noise on the phone line when it is active. (That is why DSL filters are required on the telephone instruments.

You are using the very crowded 2.4GHz band. This incurs interference from baby monitors, household cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, microwave ovens in operation, and lately, USB-3 devices. The 2.4GHz channels were set up for narrow 802.11b 11 Mbits/sec channels. If you are using a 54 Mbits/sec channel, there are only three clear channels, and based on the number of those networks seen, you are not on a clear channel. Your Router has moved you off the default 1, 6, or 11 to an intermediate frequency centered at Channel 2, but that is still subject to interference from above and below.

The worst of the Bad News is that your Signal Strength is not very good at -78, and is perilously close to the noise level of -85. You would like to see 20 to 25 points difference between the two for good performance without frequent re-transmissions. If you are "right next to the Router" you may have a disconnected antenna wire in your computer.

You may want to consider moving the Router closer to your current location, or getting a newer Dual-Band Router that includes the 5GHz band as well.

But look at that transmit rate!

You are going far slower than you should be, due to interference. It has backed off from 54 Mbps to only 18Mbps. The algorithms are trying to cope by dropping the speed.

Yeah, that is why I am wondering about the whole thing. What would you suggest to look at it further? The router is a Linksys wrt54g and I am running Yosemite.

They are getting lost because there is so much interference on top of a really weak signal.

There should not be that much interference. The connection works great most of the time, but regardless, it seems to dumb out at least a couple of times a day. I have tried ensuring that all appliances are off and everything. It is strange. Here is a WiFi map I am seeing with G-MoN2, which is an Android app for my Nexus5.
