Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

Good evening Kappy,
How long will it take to load? it started to work and then stopped. No language option came up
Not more than a five or ten minutes to load the DVD, although the installation takes around 30 minutes. I have no idea why you should have a problem unless you have a problem with the optical drive or the DVD.
Hi,
I went thru the steps and my DVD appeared that all the files are ok. I went to install the update piece and when it asks me where to use the application I get microsoft word, logmein or tuneup. I do not believe any of those will work properly. How can I tell if it is my optical drive?
Thank you
What are you doing, exactly? Installing Snow Leopard will not involve any of those items. Did you select your startup volume as the target for the installation?
Hi,
not sure unfortunately what you mean by start up volume. I set the OS X work perhaps I did something work there. I do not understand how to get to start up volume as the target location.
Let me try to explain a little clearer please
I put in the DVD.
I got to the DU
I did not see the SMART
But I was able to choose my drive and run the disk repair
Then I was able to install the OS X
First where would I navigate to find the SMART, please and Thanks!
Plus I needed to go to my system preferences first and choose the actual DVD in order to initiate the DVD. Should it have been a different choice?
Thanks
So you have installed Snow Leopard? All is working as it should? Forget about SMART. You are past that now. You would have seen it had you followed the instructions more carefully, but it isn't of great importance at this point.
At this point I am still not seeing my desk top. It took about 42 minutes for leopard to install and then I tried to install the 10.6.8 but could not find an acceptable application after the download.
Did I need to restart
Did you install leopard(10.5.x) or snow leopard(10.6.x)?
Hi, version 10.6.3
And what do you exactly mean by desktop not appearing?
I am unable to retrieve my dock and the only items on my menu bar. I still get a seagate app and a fitbit app (on the right side)
On the upper left side I have my apple icon and ca nget into firefox and mail at this time.
Thanks
What's on the monitor screen? I'm not sure what you mean by no Desktop now that you have done a fresh installation of OS X. BTW, you don't need to install Leopard. Just boot from your Snow Leopard DVD to install Snow Leopard.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
installation current.
