My late 2013 rMBP 13 inch display seems to be stuck in Sleep

Hi,

So... About 2 days ago my late 2013 rMBP would not come out of sleep. Basically, I had it charging with a iPhone USB cable plugged into it, I unplugged it from charging but left the USB cable in it. When I tried to open it up... nothing. I had a black screen.

I've been searching forums and nothing seems to work, here are a few quirks with it. I'm running OSX 10.10.2

1. I am able to attach an external monitor to it and use it only if the Macbook is closed with the external monitor connected.

2. If I have my Macbook open and the external monitor connected, when it boots up, I have the Apple logo and the progress bar reach about 1/3rd. Then, both the Macbook screen and the external monitor flicker and the Apple logo disappears and the progress bar continues to load and it gets stuck either at 100%, or a blurred version of my desktop background.

3. When I boot the system up in internet recovery mode, I am able to keep my Macbook open, although on the Macbook display, it is black and open window on the external monitor (safari) is moved over to about 1/4 of my monitor on the left.

4. When I run syslog | grep -i "wake reason" in the terminal the last entry is when I first experienced the problem I've put the computer to sleep and woken it many times since:

Mar 14 13:05:33 MacBook-Pro kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: EC.LidOpen (User)

5. When the apple backlight on my MBP is not turned on, it works with my external monitor, when it is backlit, it crashes.

6. When I open my MBP, both screen goes black and essentially crashed. I cannot replug it back and regain my lost screen.

6a. This is the the output from my console log at the exact moment when I open my MBP when it is connected to my external monitor.

16/03/2015 01:22:01.000 kernel[0]: TCON: Link or Aux (2) (0x01013333)

6b. I googled this without the date, time or number strings and there were no search results!

6c. Following this are a bunch of WindowServer: messages below are the first 5, there are about 25 in total:

16/03/2015 01:22:01.579 WindowServer[272]: Received display connect changed for display 0x3f003c

16/03/2015 01:22:01.580 WindowServer[272]: Found 27 modes for display 0x003f003c [27, 0]

16/03/2015 01:22:01.581 WindowServer[272]: Display 0x003f003c changed state to online

16/03/2015 01:22:01.606 WindowServer[272]: description_for_mode_number: IOFBGetPixelInformation failed (-536870185)

16/03/2015 01:22:01.607 WindowServer[272]: Received display connect changed for display 0x3f003d

I've tried everything short of booking an appointment at the genius bar. I had a similar problem about a month ago. It seemed to magically be resolved once when I opened my Macbook shell and it worked normally after about half a day of not working.

Kind regards,

David

I found a solution!

Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.

Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr

As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:

1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions

2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)

3. Next was a restart.

4. Then my display started working again.

5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.

6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.

Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.

I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.

I hope this helps the next person.
