Apple drops support for Aol

I was told by apple care that I had to change my Apple ID which was my AOL email address to a non AOL email address. Ive read online that it only refers to people who were using the same username and password as their AOL account. Not people who were just using their email address as the ID. Can anyone clarify this. Thanks!
