Q: Yosemite installation is stuck.

Why is installation stuck?  The wheel of death is revolving and installation does not begin. When I enter my name/password the screen goes into a wobble.  I cannot access anything on the Mac as the curser turns into a wheel.

iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Hi pondpeople,

As it's stuck, the only thing you really can do is manually power down the machine using the power button itself.

Best scenario, when you turn it on, it will carry on installation from where it left off. But I'm not sure that it will do that.

Next possible scenario, it will boot up some version of 10.10.x (depending on where it got to in installation. Hopefully this will be enough to boot and then you could download the update manually and install it again. I would stop any software running that couldn't interfere in the background.

Worst scenario, it will not boot to OS X anymore. If this happens reboot the machine and hold down Command and press R and it will boot into the recovery partition. From there, just reinstall. You shouldn't lose your data doing it this way and It should then fetch the latest update off Apples servers.

I would make a backup at your next possible chance if you have non already:

https://www.apple.com/support/backup/ (more options in alternative options link)

If you're starting to get the spinning wheel regardless of which screen you are on etc I would use Disk Utility to check permissions and file integrity on the HDD:

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

If you can type while the wheel is spinning your system has not necessarily crashed and may be busy with another task.

wobble screen is indicative of wrong user name or password entered. Make sure you're using the correct password, type it the user field so it's not hidden and validate the keyboard is functioning.

if you are still not able to get anywhere shut down and reboot and hold down CMD+OPTION+P+R for 2 consecutive reboots, 3 chimes in total.
