Upgrading RAM on iMac 2008

I have reviewed conflicting stories regarding maximum RAM for an early 2008 iMac. Apple's site says that maximum for this machine is 2 x 2GB ram chips (total of 4), yet on Apple forums also on the Apple site, people are mentioning the install of 6, 8 and even more RAM to the same machine. What is the truth? I currently have 3 GB ( 1 + 2) and want to upgrade. Second part of the question is: will this additional 1GB upgrade make it that much faster? I have recently upgraded to Yosemite and everything is moving at the speed of a snail with my current 3GB…

1. The maximum is 6GB.

2. Install a 4GB module; it'll significantly speed up the computer.

thanks for your response. If this is the case, then why does Apple say 4 is the max. for this computer (see: iMac: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support)

Just curious. My inquisitive mind needs to know…

Because they don't update their specifications when higher capacity RAM becomes available.

I have inquired about RAM and there are 2 models. There is a Centon chip for a lot less money than the Crucial one. Can I use either one? Or is one made specifically for Macs? They both seem to have the exact same specs. Except one is around $85 and the other is $140.

You can use the cheaper module, but it may not be as reliable, and unless the vendor advertises it as being compatible with your Mac model, they're not obligated to provide a refund in the event of trouble.
