Upgrading RAM on iMac 2008

I have reviewed conflicting stories regarding maximum RAM for an early 2008 iMac. Apple's site says that maximum for this machine is 2 x 2GB ram chips (total of 4), yet on Apple forums also on the Apple site, people are mentioning the install of 6, 8 and even more RAM to the same machine. What is the truth? I currently have 3 GB ( 1 + 2) and want to upgrade. Second part of the question is: will this additional 1GB upgrade make it that much faster? I have recently upgraded to Yosemite and everything is moving at the speed of a snail with my current 3GB…
