iTunes says it's updated but it's not? (and other problems)

Near the end of February, I plugged my iPhone 4S into my computer (Toshiba Satellite), as always, and it was not detected in iTunes.. Neither was my iPad mini or my iPod 4th gen. They showed up in devices, but were under the category 'unspecified'. I looked for solutions online but nothing ever worked. I tried updating my devices from the 'unknown' category, stopping and restarting the Apple Mobile Device Service (it will stop but it will not start, then all options become unavailable), repairing iTunes & driver, as well as uninstalling and completely reinstalling iTunes around five times (my music never disappears though? Like not all of the data leaves, somehow, even though I delete everything), and nothing works. I then had to switch all of my music to another computer (Lenovo Thinkpad, very old) and install iTunes on that one, to which all of my devices synced perfectly to, as well as being detected by my computer. I used that computer for my devices and music and everything was good.

However, I am now realizing that even though my iTunes is the same on both computers (latest version) and even though I checked and there are no updates on either, the iTunes on my Toshiba does not match the preview of the newest iTunes, and therefore the iTunes on the Thinkpad. It still has the File/Edit/View/Controls/Store/Help bar, and moreover looks like an older version. On top of this, when started up, it becomes unresponsive for 5 - 10 minutes.

I know I shouldn't be bothered since I switched it all to my back-up computer, but my Toshiba laptop is my main one, so I'd like to see if there's any possible way to fix this incredibly frustrating problem.

The presence/absence of the menu bar doesn't necessarily indicate different iTunes versions (it is a user configuration - Ctrl-B toggles the menu bar on and off). If iTunes is running then Help > About will show you the version - latest release (from about a month ago) is 12.1.1.4. If you can't run iTunes to see that info, check the datestamp on the files in C:\Program Files\iTunes or C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes. For 12.1.1.4 the iTunes.exe file (and most of the others in that folder) should be dated Feb. 13, 2015. Obviously an earlier date would indicate that you do have an older version. Also, assuming you're running a 64-bit edition of Windows:

  • version 12.1.0 and 12.1.1 of iTunes will be installed in C:\Program Files\iTunes (these are the first full 64-bit releases of iTunes)
  • version 12.0.1 and earlier be will installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes (previous "64-bit" versions are actually 32-bit applications with a 64-bit installer)

the exception to these being the "for older video cards" versions of 12.1.0 and 12.1.1 which, although for 64-bit systems, will install to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.

For issues related to installation / updates / reinstallation, see turingtest2's user tip on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates - Note 1 after the second boxspecifically addresses issues related to the Apple Mobile Device Service.

This support document addresses some of the device detection issues: iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support.

If a complete uninstall/reinstall, as described in the user tip referenced in my previous response doesn't improve things, it may be worth installing this alternative version:

iTunes 12.1.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)

which as well as the problems documented on that page may also resolve some performance issues with the full 64-bit version.
