How to make an encrypted disk image?

There is a method of creating an encrypted disk image (xxxxx.dmg) that can be used to keep files on your hard drive that need to kept secret. Double-click on the dmg, enter the password and the disk mounts on your desktop. I have one but I can't remember how I made it! I need another - how is it done?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), null

How to create a password-protected (encrypted) disk image - Apple Support

If you want Time Machine to back it up efficiently, use a Sparse Bundle disk image. That way, TM will only back up the changed "stripes" vice backing up the entire image every time any small thing changes inside of it. If it isn't very large, that is not a big problem. If it is very large, say 10GB, then you'd be backing up 10GB every time you change a 1KB file. With a sparse bundle, it will only back up about 8KB when that 1KB file changes.

I was hoping for something like:-

1) Open Disk Utility in your Applications, Utilities folder.

2) Select the disk where you want to create the new encrypted disk image.

3) Click ?? and enter ??

4)

5)

...)

N) Your mountable disk image has been created!

I know that it's do-able, but I need someone genuinely knowledgable to complete steps 3 to "N". Thank you.

Try following these steps to make an encrypted disk image:

1. Open Disk Utility

2. Navigate to the top of the window and click "New Image"

3. Name the image, and navigate to the bottom.

4. At the bottom, name what the volume that appears will be called (typically the same as the file name) and set the location where it will be saved to.

5. Chose the size of the image, enough to contain what you plan to place inside it

6. Under Format, chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

7. Under Encryption, chose 128-bit AES Encryption for faster encryption and 256-bit AES Encryption for more secure but slower encryption.

8. Click "Create" and set a password. Uncheck "Remember password in my keychain", and then click "OK".

Hope this helps! Reply if you have any questions or need any more help!
