I'm trying to install a program and a pop up window says


"Program" can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.


Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers.


How do I change my security preferecnes?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

To be even more explicit about lllaass' recommendation:


I also recommend you do NOT make a permanent change to those long term settings, but just make an exception for this one program, as shown in the article lllaass cited. Look for the heading:

How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper

and use the directions there to do a one-time open of that specific Application (and no others at this time).
