Is my camcorder Mac compatible?

Hi, I am wondering if my camcorder is completely compatible with a Mac. It's a Sony HandyCam DCR-TRV-250, Digital 8, etc. It has a USB 2.0 Connection. I believe that Sony doesn't make a driver for Mac's for my specific model, but I'm not totally sure, and I'm not ready to give up yet. If anyone knows anything about this, has used this specific camcorder model, or knows a website that may be able to help, please let me know. Your Support Is Very Greatly Appreciated!

Hi, a.

On the "Mac OS X Digital Camcorder Support" page, they recommend one "check with the manufacturer of your device to find out about specific Mac compatibility." There's a link on that page to Sony's site.

I checked Sony's site and they do not list that camcorder. The closest model they list is the DCR-TRV280 (note the format of the model number). However, visiting their Customer Care site, I was able to find the DCR-TRV250 FAQ page. From there I downloaded the manual for your camera.

One page 187 of the manual, concerning getting images (which I presume includes video) off the tape and into a computer via USB, it states:
"You cannot use this function in the Macintosh Environment."
You can download images from the Memory Stick using a Mac.

However, you may be able to get the video off using iMovie HD (part of iLife'06) and a Sony iLink cable for your camera. iLink is Sony's brand name for FireWire. I believe the cable is specialized: has a male connector at one end for the camera, another for a FireWire port on your Mac. You'll probably have to get the cable from Sony. See "iMovie 6.0 Help: Connecting a camcorder to your computer."

Then try the instructions in "iMovie 6.0 Help: Importing video from your camcorder."

I've not tried any of the above with your specific camera model. I'm going strictly on the basis of reading the documentation. The iLink-FireWire approach with iMovie may still not work, but it may be worth a try: the risk is the cost of the cable and the time to try.

You may want to try your question on the iMovie Discussions.

EDIT: I see while I was researching this, you found out it will work with FireWire. So, the advice I provided above should get you going once you have the correct cable.

Good luck!
