I can see how that can be frustrating when iTunes is crashing and when you are trying to burn a CD. Anytime that you run into iTunes not performing they way you expect it to, refer to the article below for issues with it crashing. Try launching iTunes in Safe Mode as well as testing out burning a CD in a different user.

Thanks for your reply.
I went through the article and in the end it turned out to be a problem with my DVD/CD drive. I ran Microsoft fixit and it resolved the issue.
