Q: Missing songs and playlists after update

After installing the latest update on my iPod touch 5, iTunes will not manually sync songs, has deleted many songs off my iPod and all my playlists.  They show "on my device" in iTunes but not on my iPod.  I am a dance teacher and use my music every day. Help!

I have the same problem and I tried the reset trouble shoot; no luck.  I am always leery about updating itunes because for me it never gets better only worse: this time I had no choice and had to update.  Is there a way to roll back to an earlier version?  The only reason I have my touch is to play music and now it's not good for that!

I have the same problem with my iPod 5.  I was using iTunes 11 with iOS 7 and everything was fine.  Then I upgraded my iPod from iOS 7 to iOS 8 and began experiencing many of the same problems you're describing.  So I upgraded my iTunes to version 12, hoping it would fix the problem with my iPod.  It didn't so my conclusion is that the problem is with the iPod iOS 8.  I also have a 4th generation iPod with its original operating system and it still works fine with iTunes 12.

Fortunately, since I have always manually synced my iPods, I still have all my music on my iPod 5 - I just can't add new songs or update playlists.  It also doesn't work with my car audio system anymore (although the iPod 4 does), but it still works with my wireless speakers at home.  So not all is lost, but it is frustrating to take Apple's advice and upgrade THEIR software and then to have all these problems.

I called Apple support about this and had 2 of their people work on this problem for about 45 min and the 2nd tier support person couldn't figure out why this was happening and had no way to restore my music.  In the end I had to do a complete system restore and now have to start rebuilding my library all over again.  Not much help

If you updated via iTunes and the songs/playlists were not in the iTunes library then yur will have to get them from where you obtained them before and sync them to your device.

If you updated via Settings>General>software update then there was glitch and they were corrupted/erased.

    Sys them to your device

I was having this exact problem with my iphone 6 after updating. I SOLVED this issue by going

SETTINGS > MUSIC > iCloud Music Library > OFF

Thank you BOBRIEN.  It worked for me also.  But I had some fearful moments.  Once I turned off iCloud Music Library I had to face a pop up saying this would erase all of the Apple Music on my phone.  I finally decided to take a chance that the Apple Music would likely be a small portion of my music and said OK.  Actually none of the music was erased, just the one remaining fragment of a playlist.  Then a pop up offered to create new playlists for me.  Instead I went back to Settings > Music and turned ON the iCloud Music Library.  Up popped an option to reload previous playlists, which I clicked.  In about a minute, all of my playlists were back on my phone.  Whew!  Again, thank you BOBRIEN for pointing me down that path.
