Can you wipe a phone that is offline?

Can you wipe an iPhone 4 that is offline? I was upgrading to an iPhone 5 and I made the mistake of transferring the number and activating the new phone before wiping the old one. I still have the old phone, but I'd like to sell it. And of course, since I can't connect anywhere, I can't wipe it, and I can't sell a phone that hasn't been wiped. Any help would be appreciated.

ChrisJ, thanks for the reply! I've read that article, but in my case, the problem is that I have no current connectivity on the phone, and so when I go to Settings/Reset/Erase All Contents and Settings, it tells me my phone is not active, and it can't do it. The same thing happens if I try to wipe it through the Find My I Phone app. It says it will wipe it, but only after it is re-connected.
