Sync iPad Air with iTunes

I have a new iPad air. I am trying to sync new books purchased outside of iBooks. When I connect my iPad to my MAC to sync with iTunes, I get the message, "iTunes could not connect to the iPad "Rena iPad Air" because the device timed out."

So, I cannot sync my iPad with iTunes on my Mac.
