Q: Will ilife 06 work on MacBook Pro 10.10.2 OS X Yosemite?

I'm looking for a simple to use video editing program to edit home movies.

I have MacBook Pro 10.10.2 Yosemite

Looks like the 06 version of ilife has gotten good reviews.

Any suggestions?

iMovie 6 HD, which in my opinion is the best iMovie version available and the best for working with iDVD 7,  is not compatible with Yosemite.  There is a workaround/hack to make it work with Yosemite but I find it iffy at best. I have an external HD with Mavericks on it that I can boot into to run iMovie 6 HD to create videos to use with iDVD 7. iMovie would be the only app from iLife 06 that is worthwhile.

You will also need a later version of the iLIfe disk, namely iLife 09, to get the latest version of iDVD and all of it's themes.

    Thanks for the reply OT.....

So, what video editing program would you recommend I use?  I am not computer savvy enough to try to make iMove 6 HD work with my computer.

I'd start with iMovie. It can do a lot.    I don't use it because I don't edit movies much and never tried to learn the newer versions after iMovie 6 HD was replaced.    I create most of my movies from stills so use iPhoto to create and modify.  What little editing I do, cropping, joining, splicing, I use Quicktime Player 7 with Quicktime Pro.

Thanks OT.  I've been working with iMovie which came installed on my MacBook Pro, but was just wondering if there was something else out there which was easy to use or if there was something better.

There are some more powerful apps out there but they are rather expensive.  Ask in the iMovie community about "easier" to learn apps.

I'm not finding any problems with Yosemite and iMovie HD 06.  Some people keep a separate hard drive or partition with Mavericks on it to avoid the below procedure. However, once you get the below set up, it's no big deal.

A while back, someone posted a "patch" to iMovie HD 06 that corrected the launching issue. For some reason, Apple removed the post.

Yosemite has a bug that incorrectly identifies iMovie 6 (a.k.a. iMovie HD) as not compatible.  iMovie HD works fine with Yosemite.

Below is a workaround that many use until this bug is fixed.

Find iMovie HD in your applications folder.

Right click on it, and select “Show Package Contents”.

You will then find a folder named "Contents”.  Open it.  Then open the folder named "MacOS”.

There you will find "iMovie HD".  Double-click on this, and iMovie HD will launch.

Then create an alias. iMovie HD starts directly from the alias.

Please report the bug to Apple, the more reports, the sooner it will get fixed.
