Q: iMac Won't Boot After Installing Security Update 2015-002

Let the install happen overnight. Today, my computer won't even boot. The startup sound happens, the screen becomes gray, the "loading bar" starts. About 1/3 of the bar loads over a few minutes, and then the screen goes black and the computer turns off.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down). If you can reinstall the system from there

I prefer to be connected to the internet via ethernet rather than WiFi for installs.  So if you have an option pick ethernet.

Thank you very much, Old Toad, that got me through the boot screen! Now I'm looking at the OS X Utilities. Of course, I don't have a. time Machine Backup to restore from.

i ran the Disk Utility and "Verified Disk" and got this error: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.

    !!!

    thanks.

Ok, so I clicked "Repair Disk" and "the partition map has been repaired." Now I'm verifying again...

Didn't you get this option when you booted into the Recovery volume?

If you need to reinstall the system that's the option to use.  It will not affect your user files.

I did see that option, but began by Verifying my user disk permissions  I got an error there and started Repairing. If this doesn't resolve the Boot problem I'll reinstall OSX. Glad to hear it won't mess with my files.

Looks like the disk failed or is failing.  Make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius Bar for a free diagnosis.

THe exact same thing happened to me. I too unfortunately didnt have a timemachine backup at that time and believe me i learned from that misktake. ALWAYS have backups

what i did was to clone my hd using disk utility to an external disk. erased the hard disk. Installed snowleopard using install dvd. Manually restored my important files from the dmg clone. Not ideal but saved me a visit to apple and sometimes just erasing the hd does it

also try disk warrior it is not free but i have heard it can repair really bad HDs

also do all of this only if your S.M.A.R.T, status says verified

I have the same question, except my screen doesn't go black and turn off.

It just stays with the 1/3 of the bar loaded.

    Command R doesn't do anything.

What do you recommend I try next please?

Same issue here. No way all of our hard drives are failing at the same time. How can we bypass the update & get back to business?

I ended up calling Apple and telling them. Since I had run through all the exercises above (and told them as much) the phone support – I do not have apple care on this machine – didn't know what else to do except schedule me at a Genius Bar. I took it in to them, they wiped the machine, reinstalled 10.10.2 and sent me on my merry way. Granted I lost all my data since I didn't have a backup, but there was nothing wrong with any of my hardware.

    Would this work?

    Replace hard drive on iMac.

    Load OSX

Place old drive in external enclosure & plug into mac

Drag important files back onto mac

    ???

Yes if the drive that you have replaced has not failed. Although you can use carbon copy cloner (or any other such software) to clone your old hd to the new one

I have tried the reinstall about 5 times.

Each time it seems to get hung up in a different place.

I checked the drive and everything is verified and no repairs needed.

Now what else can I try?
