Mar 18, 2015 11:26 AM in response to Old Toadby smokingmole,Thank you very much, Old Toad, that got me through the boot screen! Now I'm looking at the OS X Utilities. Of course, I don't have a. time Machine Backup to restore from.
i ran the Disk Utility and "Verified Disk" and got this error: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.
!!!
thanks.

Mar 18, 2015 11:45 AM in response to Old Toadby smokingmole,I did see that option, but began by Verifying my user disk permissions I got an error there and started Repairing. If this doesn't resolve the Boot problem I'll reinstall OSX. Glad to hear it won't mess with my files.

Mar 18, 2015 1:52 PM in response to smokingmoleby Old Toad,Looks like the disk failed or is failing. Make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius Bar for a free diagnosis.

Mar 18, 2015 1:59 PM in response to smokingmoleby DheemanF04,THe exact same thing happened to me. I too unfortunately didnt have a timemachine backup at that time and believe me i learned from that misktake. ALWAYS have backups
what i did was to clone my hd using disk utility to an external disk. erased the hard disk. Installed snowleopard using install dvd. Manually restored my important files from the dmg clone. Not ideal but saved me a visit to apple and sometimes just erasing the hd does it
also try disk warrior it is not free but i have heard it can repair really bad HDs
also do all of this only if your S.M.A.R.T, status says verified

Mar 18, 2015 4:15 PM in response to smokingmoleby chris sunny,I have the same question, except my screen doesn't go black and turn off.
It just stays with the 1/3 of the bar loaded.
Command R doesn't do anything.
What do you recommend I try next please?

Mar 18, 2015 6:19 PM in response to smokingmoleby blind visionary,Same issue here. No way all of our hard drives are failing at the same time. How can we bypass the update & get back to business?

Mar 18, 2015 11:46 PM in response to smokingmoleby smokingmole,I ended up calling Apple and telling them. Since I had run through all the exercises above (and told them as much) the phone support – I do not have apple care on this machine – didn't know what else to do except schedule me at a Genius Bar. I took it in to them, they wiped the machine, reinstalled 10.10.2 and sent me on my merry way. Granted I lost all my data since I didn't have a backup, but there was nothing wrong with any of my hardware.

Mar 19, 2015 11:50 AM in response to blind visionaryby DheemanF04,Yes if the drive that you have replaced has not failed. Although you can use carbon copy cloner (or any other such software) to clone your old hd to the new one

Mar 20, 2015 2:20 PM in response to Old Toadby chris sunny,I have tried the reinstall about 5 times.
Each time it seems to get hung up in a different place.
I checked the drive and everything is verified and no repairs needed.
Now what else can I try?
