Q: iMac Won't Boot After Installing Security Update 2015-002

Let the install happen overnight. Today, my computer won't even boot. The startup sound happens, the screen becomes gray, the "loading bar" starts. About 1/3 of the bar loads over a few minutes, and then the screen goes black and the computer turns off.

    All:

Where is Apple on this issue that appears to be happening to many people?  I am using Yosemite  on my I_Mac and I too get stuck with a gray screen.

The command R  brings up the OSX Utilities screen, but while I have cursor control, I cannot click on any of the options--probably my wireless trackball not being fully connected.  Now where is that tiny apple mouse?

Apple--What did you do to mess so many of us up???????

    Hey OT.

I got the OS X utilities screen and spent 5+ hours downloading the OS 10.10.  It automatically started to restart and got hung up on the gray screen just like before.  Any other ideas.  I do have Time Machine on an external back up drive.  I may also have Yosemite on  disk which I purchased, but….

Time to make an appointment at your nearest Apple Genius Bar for a free diagnosis of the situation.

    DheemanF04, can you explain something?

IF I boot to "disc utility" I can clone the drive to an external drive without removing it?

Erase the internal drive after clone & re-install OS? Then restore clone?

    thanks for any guidance

    Matt

Yes. If you can get to disk utility in recovery mode.

Use the restore function of disk utility to clone your internal hd to your external drive.

then erase your internal drive. install OS X. and restore your files from external hd.

Well you are not going to get Apple to respond here as they just don't do that but I'm following this thread with interest because I'm having the exact same issue as you and the OP. I started a thread of my  own yesterday here but no solution. The closest genius bar is 200 miles away so I won't be going there anytime soon.

    All:

Search for Update 2015-003 on this site.  Linc Davis has a number of things that can be tried.  I tried them all, but not sure that any worked except I got to the OS X utilities screen using one of his methods.  I reloaded OS 10.10 (download from Ap Store) .  The first time it did not work, but hung up as before on the gray screen after a partial restart.   I zapped the NVRAM, repaired the permissions and disc, disconnected everything except my network.  I even tried backing up from my Time Machine stoage disc.

Finally, I tried to reload Yosemite for the AP Store again.  Yes, the machine restarted and appears nothing has been lost except a few e-mails and my signature block after two days of being down.

Now I have that 2105-003 update trying to download and install.  Heck-to install or not to install, that is the question..

Old Toad, I hope you get this message because I don't know how to contact you through the community, so I'm just replying to a random message of yours. I'm new.  You seem to know a lot about Photos and I hope you can please help me.

I'm currently using El Capitan and am running Photos.  My mother died last week and I'm trying to prepare a slideshow for her memorial.  The Vintage Print theme is perfect for this.  I've created the slideshow, no problem.  However, the church says I must present the slideshow to them in a Powerpoint and I don't know if or how I can export this slideshow with this theme to Powerpoint.  I've tried googling it, and you're the name that comes up most often for the search words I'm using.

I'm going to contact the media guy at the church to see if there are other options, but in the meantime, I thought I'd ask you.  Can it be exported to Powerpoint?  If not, is it possible to download the slideshow onto a CD and have that play simply in a PC, just like a video?  Do you have any other suggestions.  I so appreciate your help if you can give it.

    Thank you,

    Benita
