My wife forgot her password to her MacBook Pro.

How does she gain access to the computer without a password?

Depends on what version of OS X you are running.

Resetting or changing a password:

For Snow Leopard or earlier: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274

For Lion or later: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6022

For Mavericks users:

If it's running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.

If it's running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, open the Terminal, and use the resetpassword command:

Thanks for your prompt all-encompassing reply. Unfortunately, after I successfully changed the password for the computer I received instructions in a pop-up that I should change my keychain access by going to Applications-->Utilities-->keychain access. But before that multiple boxes popped up with "Mail wants to use log-in keychain" and then asks for the password. The newly installed computer password doesn't work. I had to hit the cancel button multiple times to escape the pop up, but then encountered the same message for messages, and needing multiple hits on the cancel button before I could escape. I then went to the key chain access and again encountered "Keychain access wants to use "login" keychain and again asks for a password but does not recognize the new password.

What to do?
