I understand that you wish to manage your fonts on your Mac. Here is an article for you about doing exactly that:

You can do some organizing to reduce the number of font locations. I have been setting up a folder for my fonts since the early days of OS X, with the location varying but these days mostly in Users/Shared/name-of-folder-containing-my-fonts. Within that, they are somewhat organized further by source (folders for Adobe, Linotype, Bitstream etc.). Beyond that, I'd suggest using a decent font manger such as Font Explorer Pro or Suitcase. If you do that, you need to disable Font Book.

How do you tell who the maker of the font is?
Suitcase or Font Explorer Pro will show the foundry info. I would think that most font viewer apps (as opposed to font managers) will do that as well. Most of my fonts, except for a few freebies, come from readily identifiable sources, and I have organized them that way, going back quite a few years. So folders for URW, Monotype, Bitstream, etc.
