I have a 318gb capacity but only 50mb free after trying to repair disc. How can I make all that capactiy available please anyone

Please provide more details as to how you attempted to repair the disk.
Used disk utility and inserted DVD that came with machine
Then selected DVD as source and drive as destination. Only after complete did I realize this may not have been a good idea
Do you have a backup?
Then your only alternative now is to reformat and reinstall from the install DVD. This of course mean that you will lose everything that was on the disk drive.
Once you get your Mac running again, you should seriously consider implementing a backup plan so that the next time something like this happens you will not lost everything.
Alan, thanks tried that and receive error message that there is nothing to unmount

Eric, Alan just to let you know we have now successfully wiped the drive. Now struggling to get the download from the store. Let it run for 2 hours last night! Will try again later.
Thanks to both Alan and Eric for your time. We're now back in after following the instructions. Lesson learnt for us, tried to make it more difficult than it was. More used to Windows products, lol.
